For many years, my students have been asking me to write the kind of book they could carry with them on buses and read in the middle of a dive into cheese nachos. The kind of book they could pick up when they need to be reminded that being thin and happy and gorgeous is just a breath away. For just as feeling fat has nothing to do with the size of your body, neither does feeling thin. Both are shorthand for inner states of mind and heart. While there is obviously a physical reality of fatness or thinness, that reality is profoundly affected by the things we say to ourselves, the lack of respect or curiosity or kindness we are able to muster. This book is about understanding that what you want from being “thin and gorgeous and happy” will never be achieved by telling yourself you are fat and ugly. It is about understanding that the open-hearted, powerful, expansive state most people associate with being thin is directly connected to, and profoundly influenced by, your inner life. When the women I work with contact that power, strength, and joy inside themselves, they suddenly realize that these are what they wanted all along, what they thought they could get only by being thin. They realize they have everything they want now; they are already whole, already complete. After arriving at this understanding, they are no longer fighting the voices in their heads that tell them they are fat and ugly, and simultaneously want to deprive them of the only sweetness left: food. Losing weight is no longer a struggle because the whole of them—their minds and their bodies—is now on the same side. During the years I’ve been teaching workshops, students have asked me to repeat certain things over and over. Certain questions are always asked; certain themes always emerge. Everyone wants to know how to remove the obstacles that keep them from realizing their innate strength, power, and joy; they want to know how to lose weight without torturing themselves, how to end the obsession with food, and why chocolate is not a major food group. These are the things I have written about here. These are the things I say to myself and to the women in my workshops when we are convinced that this time, we not only feel fat, we are fat. May this book help you act on your own behalf with kindness, curiosity, and humor. May it help you free yourself so that everything in your life becomes fluid, unfettered, and easy. Including, of course, your jeans.
